Kinja'd!!!

Two of our biggest Blue-faced ewes gave birth almost simultaniously. One is a smart, older ewe and other is an energetic younger ewe. As far as we can tell they both had triplets, but older ewe decided she only really wanted twins. Younger ewe was trying to round up four, which is hard work... Based on size and looks we tried to pawn one back off the older ewe, to which she replied “no thank you, I would like to only raise two” but less politely and with more sheep-like behavior including head butting. We tried to take him back to the younger ewe, but by then she had figured out that those three smelled like her and the fourth one wasn’t really hers.

Kinja'd!!!

So now we have him. He’s very active and bright, we can’t find a reason other than chosing to only raise two why old 209 would have rejected him, while keeping his two sisters... Well, we’ve named him Wilfred and he now gets the full bottle lamb treatment. Sadly this will greatly devalue him as potential breeding stock :/ He’ll probably end up without a job, and that means in the freezer.

[update below]

Oh man... This one... He’s gonna be trouble.

I’m on overnight lamb duty, so I’m sleeping on the futon downstairs. Not only did this little hooligan escape his containment box, he managed to climb up onto the couch to sleep next to me.

Kinja'd!!!

It’s adorable as fuck, but also, if he’s like this at less than 12 hours old... Oh boy.

[update #2]

One of our most motherly, milky ewes just had twins, so we’re attempting to foster little Wilfred on her. Summer is a bit of a helicopter mom, and always has tons of milk, she seems to have accepted him with the goo-rubbing/temporary hog-tie trick... Now we just have to hope he decides having a sheep mom is better than having a people mom... *fingers crossed*

[#3]

After further consideration Summer decided she does NOT want Wilfred after all :p

He’s back with us, and quite pleased with that fact.

Lamb prices here are going nuts... perhaps you can get someone to pay good money to put him in their freezer (sooner rather than later)?

He’s just a baby, everything in the world including the world is new to him and he’ll want to be with someone or something he knows for warmth and reassurance because so far, your all he knows. So for a while , you are going to be each others body warmer. Take care both.

Now I’m going to get to bed.

Your ever like any of your animals enough that you decide to keep them? I’d be such a terrible farmer.

“Honey did you plant the years crops and slaughter the cows?”

“I took the tractor built a dirt race track and we now have 30 new pets!"

Man, the temptation to make myself a track through the fields is very real. I can’t do it when there’s crops on the fields ( we don’t do field work ourselves and instead rent the land out to cash croppers), but one winter I’m probably going to make myself a course through the snow or clear a large area and make myself a winter autocross lot.

As for the animals (pigs in my case) I always have a couple of favourites in the barn that I don’t really want to ship out when they’re old/big enough. I always get over it but I’ll carry them on to the truck rather than herding them on with the rest.

We have kept a couple for ourselves though, r ight now we have 2 - 1 will be a boar, the other will likely end up in the freezer.

I would love to take him off your hands (you offered the other day for one of your other bottle babies) but Mrs. Snuze is firmly against it. Something about “we don’t have a farm” and “it’s against the HOA rules”, blah blah blah. Anyways, good luck with this one!

We keep 15’ open around the edges of the fields for the race track.  Winter time 4x4 drift trucks are fun.

We have never outright just “kept” one that wasn’t valuable or productive, but we can get pretty attached to ewes. Two years ago we had a ram lamb that we were dreading having to eat, but we managed to find him a job as a companion ram for one we sold as a breeder. Stephen was no genetic winner, he was stunted, had poor conformation, and was prone to illness. But, he was the sweetest ram we’ve ever had and a funny, curious, gentle sheep. The farm that took him agrees with us that he is a special critter and he has rapidly become everyone’s favorite. We’re glad he found a place to live out his days where his inadequacies are allowed.

As in you keep 15’ around the edges cleared for shenanigans in winter or is it left unplanted year-round for that purpose? Also, a beater truck is something I might need to add to the stable.

We have enough driveway on the property (~1.5-2km) to have fun in the WRX when it’s snow- covered,  so I’m not starved of opportunity, but all the open space is very tempting for making tracks to rip around on in something I care less about.

I leave 15’ not planted all year. I can get almost a two mile loop with two woods trails to connect each field. I have a drag to knock down the ruts.

We race all kinds are things. Dirt bikes. Quads. Brand new trucks. I have a beater truck also. A few cars. Snowmobiles

The fun is worth more than the bit of wasted crop space. Redneck entertainment.

That’s awesome. Ours would be mostly straight lines if we did the same so it’d be a dull track. It would also take off several thousand dollars worth of yearly income in usable acreage.

I’m looking to buy a nearby plot of less aerable land to build a house/shop and screw around on. There one for sale nearby with a decent shop already on it but their price is high considering the minimal value I’d assign for the land from a farming perspective. I think t hey were hoping to ride the high market but it’s been sitting 9 months now with a 10% price drop. I’ve been hoping for a bit of a housing market crash, which is less of a hope and more of an eventuality now.

I have to be honest, I don’t think I could raise livestock. It’s easy enough taking a nameless deer, but something that has cuddled with me? Nope, I’d be blubbering like a baby when it came time.

I see that... But I also see the most responsible way to be a meat eater. We know our animals, and we care for them, and give them a good life, and when it comes time they provide us with sustenance and income. We understand what it means to be part of the circle of life, as the Lion King would say... And there’s no need to treat your food like crap. In fact, it literally tastes better when you treat it well. This is one of the huge issues I have with PETA and other radical animal rights groups... If you can’t be part of the predator-prey hierarchy because of your beliefs, that’s fine. But it DOES NOT have to mean that those who engage in it are mistreating their food. Factory farms and the corporate food structure of the western world SUCK a lot, but when I get attacked for (not saying that’s what you’re doing) for being a responsible meat eater it makes me angry. There are too many people who are unwilling to take the responsibility they should for how they eat, even those who stick to vegan or vegetarian diets. Just because they can’t handle the responsibility doesn’t mean we can’t. Farmers love their animals... There’s not a good farmer you’ll talk to who doesn’t. We are 100% responsible for the health, wellbeing, and happiness of our animals, and without them we wouldn’t be where we are. It’s got layers, there is no simple, flat truth. Our sheep are happier, healthier and better fed than that deer you shot in the woods... We do our utmost to ensure that. And when we enjoy the results, and know that our agricultural practices help sequester carbon and improve soil health and stability, we can rest easy after eating a delicious mutton curry, like the one I’m cooking right now...

I think you misread me a bit, I 100% agree with you. My grandfather had a farm and more than one occasion it was my turn to kill a chicken for dinner. I’ve been to abattoirs (one of the weirdest school trips I’ve ever been on, I can still remember the smell) and I’m well aware of how our meat is produced so what you said about the big meat factories is spot on. My dad was very big on instilling in us as kids that when you killed something, you’d do it for very good reasons (he forced me to cook and eat a crow I shot when I was trying to show off too my buddies as a teenager) so when I go hunting its because:
A.) We have an overpopulation of deer and it’s negatively impacting the forests around me.
B.) It’s more ethical than buying meat from the grocery store that is normally sourced from factory farms like you said. It’s mostly option A these days as I get the majority of my meat from local farms around us because they’re all grass fed and ethically raised.

I was using deer as an example just because it’s the only frame of reference I have these days. Now that I think back there was one chicken on my Oupa’s farm that I hatched and raised and I was absolutely devastated when a fox got her. I guess for me I have an issue separating pets from livestock and if I were in your situation, that lamb would be a pet to me. I’m not admonishing you at all, just saying how I’d react in that situation.

Lamb curry is good, but by far mutton curry is my favourite.
